A system and method for controlling the output of a semiconductor laser is presented. The system and method includes using non¬ linear equations to calculate a state space model of the laser sound an operating point. Adaptiv e algorithms are calculated and control signals determined using a controller (see Fig. 14, Character 925) to determine appropriate control laws and cost functions, which are then optimized and used to feedback (Fig. 14, CHaracter 920) a control signal to the semiconductor laser improve the performance and stabilize the output of the laser.
