PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a two-terminal surface mount piezoelectric resonator with an externally mounted load capacitor used in a thickness longitudinal ternary harmonic mode that prevents primary or quinary spurious oscillation or the like. SOLUTION: The piezoelectric resonator 1 includes a piezoelectric substrate 10, vibration electrodes 11, 12, and extraction electrodes 14, 15. The vibration electrodes 11, 12 are formed opposite to each other on both principal sides of the piezoelectric substrate 10, conductive to external terminals 51, 52 via the extraction electrodes 14, 15, so as to form vibration spaces 110, 120 at the surrounding including the vibration electrodes 11, 12. A ceiling plate 3 and a base substrate 4 are made of a dielectric material to surround the vibration spaces 110, 120 and to integrate the piezoelectric resonator 1 by clamping both the sides of the piezoelectric resonator 1 thereby forming inter-terminal composite capacitance whose capacitance is 0.5pF to 10pF between the external terminals 51 and 52.
