PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording device capable of accurately performing the detection of tip using a reflective sensor without being influenced by the floating of a recording medium caused by curl with respect to a rolled recording medium. SOLUTION: The recording device which performs recording by scanning a carriage mounted with a recording head with respect to the recording medium 34 comprises a carrying means for carrying the recording medium, an optical sensor 32 provided to the carriage, a decision means for deciding the position of the tip of the recording medium by carrying the recording medium with the carrying means to compare the value detected by the optical sensor with a first value, a holding means for holding the information regarding the position of the tip decided by the decision means, and an updating means for comparing the value detected by the optical sensor with a second value to update the information held by the holding means.
