Biological treatment of gases containing 40-95 vol.% hydrocarbons and 2-60 vol.% carbon dioxide comprises scrubbing the gas with a suspension of microorganisms to absorb carbon dioxide and transferring the suspension to an open photobioreactor in which the carbon dioxide is photosynthetically fixed and the resulting oxygen is released into the atmosphere. An independent claim is also included for apparatus for biological treatment of gases as above, comprising a fermenter (8), a gas scrubber (2), a photobioreactor (5) and a gas storage unit (10).
