<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide optical films having excellent transparency, which can be utilized for protective films for polarizing plates, phase difference films or films for enlarging angle of visibility used for liquid crystal display devices, etc., or various functional films used for plasma displays such as antireflection films, etc., or various functional films used for organic EL displays, etc., and to provide its manufacturing method so as to eliminate displaying defects of liquid crystal display devices caused by foreign substances in the optical films, and to improve handling characteristics in manufacture processes. <P>SOLUTION: The optical film is manufactured by solution casting or melt extrusion. A process for surface treatment is provided between a casting process and a roll-up process so as to apply the treatment on the film surface using a surface shape transfer roll. The treated film rolled up in the roll-up process has a surface roughness (arithmetical mean roughness: Ra) of preferably 0.5-50.0 nm.
