PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an error diffusion method for halftoning continuous tone images. SOLUTION: A method is disclosed which includes halftoning a source image and outputting a rendered image. The halftoning includes error diffusion processing of a first separation of plurality of color separations of a pre-rendered image after error diffusion processing of a second separation of the plurality of color separations of the pre-rendered image. The error diffusion processing of the first separation includes, for respective pixel values corresponding to the first separation, choosing respective magnitudes of the respective pixel values as a function of the error diffusion processing of the second separation. Output of a rendered image comprises the same plurality of color separations.
