PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for detecting speed of boats which can discriminate speed and go-ahead and back astern with a single device. SOLUTION: The (a) of Fig.5 is a side view figure of an 8-blade paddle 50 and the blade of paddle consist of magnetized blades 42a to 42c and non-magnetized blades 43a to 43e so that the pulse pattern detected with the sensor 33 varies according to the rotational directions. The (b) and (c) are pulse patterns in go-ahead and back astern of each boat, which generate different pulses T, T1 and T2 with the particular magnetized blades. The operation part 44 recognizes the go-ahead and back astern by the pulse interval T and the following pulses T1 or T2, and a generation period T0 of T is calculated from a reference of a certain pulse interval T. Based on the T0, a revolution speed of a paddle is calculated and the speed of the boat is operated. By this process, the speed is detected with the rotation of the paddle and the sailing direction of the boat can be determined from the rotation direction of the paddle. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
