An optical system ( 100, 200 ) and method of use includes at least one light source ( 105, 106, 107, 211, 302 ), each of which transmit light substantially of a particular wavelength range in a substantially randomly polarized state or an unpolarized state. The optical system ( 100, 200 ) includes a reflective polarizer ( 108, 204, 305 ) coupled to the light source, and an element ( 101, 102, 103, 201, 202, 203, 301 ) that redirects the reflected light through the light source and onto the reflective polarizer. Illustratively there is substantially no optical distance between the light source ( 105, 106, 107, 211, 302 ) and the element ( 101, 102, 103, 201, 202, 203, 301 ). An optical package, which recycles reflected light is also disclosed.
