PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focus detector capable of detecting a focusing point at high speed. SOLUTION: The automatic focus detector includes: a focusing point detection means for detecting a focusing point by generating contrast information showing a focusing degree based on a high frequency component in an imaging signal corresponding to each focusing detection area when setting a plurality of focusing areas with a part of a photoelectric conversion area out of the obtained imaging signals stored after photoelectric conversion by an imaging device as the focusing detection area; and a signal generation circuit for generating a driving signal for driving an imaging lens asynchronously with an imaging synchronizing signal for driving the imaging device. The imaging lens is driven and controlled so that the contrast information showing the focusing degree may be generated by moving the imaging lens in an optical axis direction according to the driving signal in the storage period of the imaging signal, and a focusing position where the value of the contrast information becomes maximum is detected independently of every focusing detection area.
