PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of performing proper magnification processing providing less deterioration in a read image even when any read mode is selected in the case that a plurality of read modes exist at original reading. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus determines which of a first magnification processing and a second magnification processing is to be selected on the basis of a result of comparing a set read magnification with a prescribed threshold value in the case of reading an original at the set reading magnification wherein the first magnification processing performs the magnification processing by revising a carrying speed of the original and the second magnification processing performs the magnification processing by using both a speed revision means and an electronic magnification means, and when the read mode is a color mode, the threshold value is multiplied with 1.6 (steps S103, S104), and when the read mode is a monochromatic mode, the threshold value is multiplied with 2.0 (steps S103, S106).
