PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning optical device and an image forming apparatus in which the positional variation of a collimator lens due to the environmental variation in assembly process and thereafter is suppressed and optical performance is assured. SOLUTION: The typical structure of the scanning optical device A has a semiconductor laser 1 which emits laser light and a collimator lens 2 which substantially parallelizes the laser light L emitted from the semiconductor laser 1. The scanning optical device A is characterized in that the collimator lens 2 is supported in a direction (shown by arrow X) in which the optical characteristic in a scanning optical system is non-sensitive.
