A device for the electrolytic treatment of water and aqueous solutions having an inlet (3) for the liquid to be treated and an outlet (4) for the treated liquid and also having an electrolysis unit which has electrodes arranged between the inlet (3) and the outlet (4), which electrodes can be connected to mutually different electric potentials, the potential difference being selected to be at least high enough that electrolysis of water and/or of chloride ions present in the water can take place, the electrodes comprising at least one anode and one cathode (5), and a first anode region (9, 91) being provided which is fabricated from a material stable to oxidation, is characterized in that a further anode region (8, 8') is provided which is fabricated at least in part from a carbonaceous material. This produces a device by which both disinfection and hardness stabilization of a liquid to be treated can proceed cheaply and efficiently.
