PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Pb-free steel for a connecting rod suitably usable upon the production of a high strength connecting rod having excellent fatigue properties, to provide a stock for a high strength connecting rod obtained by using the steel for a connecting rod and having excellent machinability (particularly, a tool life) and fatigue properties, and to provide a method for producing the stock for a connecting rod. SOLUTION: The steel for a connecting rod has a composition comprising, by mass, 0.15 to 0.30% C,≤0.35% (exclusive of 0%) Si, 0.8 to 1.6% Mn, 0.16 to 0.3% S, 0.22 to 0.35% V,≤0.3% (exclusive of 0%) Cr,≤0.015% (exclusive of 0%) N and≤0.03% (exclusive of 0%) Al, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
