The invention comprises compounds of formula: R(3-q)P[(-OCnH2n-)mX]q where R, or each R present which may be the same or different, represents an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical joined to the phosphorus atom through an oxygen or nitrogen atom, or two Rs together represent an aromatic hydrocarbon radical linked to the phosphorus atom through two ortho oxygen atoms, q is 1, 2 or 3, n is an integer from 1 to 4, m is 1, 2 or 3 and each X represents: <FORM:0954071/C2/1> or two Xs together represent a: <FORM:0954071/C2/2> radical, and Y and Z are each hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl. They may be prepared by reacting PCl3 or a phosphorous acid ester or amide dichloride or diester or diamide monochloride with an appropriate hydroxyalkylated phenol or amine. The products are used to stabilize polymers (see Division C3).ALSO:Synthetic rubber and chlorinated polymers are stabilized by the incorporation of organic phosphorous acid derivatives of formula: R(3-q) P [(-OCnH2n-)mX]q where R, or each R present which may be the same or different, represents an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical joined to the phosphorus atom through an oxygen or nitrogen atom, or two Rs together represent an aromatic hydrocarbon radical linked to the phosphorus atom through two ortho oxygen atoms, q is 1,2 or 3, n is an integer from 1 to 4, m is 1, 2 or 3 and each X represents: <FORM:0954071/C3/1> or two Xs together represent a: <FORM:0954071/C3/2> radical, and Y and Z are each hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl (for preparation see Division C2). Polymers which may be stabilized include: polymers of conjugated diolefines; copolymers of conjugated diolefines and vinyl compounds; copolymers of isoolefines and conjugated diolefines; polymers of chlorobutadiene and copolymers of chlorobutadiene with mono-and/or di-olefines or vinyl compounds; polymers of vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride and copolymers of these with 2-chlorobutadiene, vinyl acetate, chlorinated rubber or sulphochlorinated polyethylene. The stabilizers may be admixed with synthetic rubber latex or with rubber solutions or with the solid polymer, e.g. by kneading or on a roller, or in certain circumstances may be admixed with the monomers prior to polymerization. 0.1 to 10% by weight of stabilizer based on the polymer may be used. Examples describe the stabilization of 1, 4-cispolysioprene, polychloroprene and polyvinyl chloride. Other substances present in one or other of the examples are: cyclohexane, n-hexane, isopropanol, stearic acid, carbon black, zinc oxide, phenyl-a -napthylamine, paraffin, sulphur, dibenzthiazyl disulphide, diphenyl guanidine, phenthiazine, titanium dioxide, magnesium oxide, ethylene thiourea, an alkylsulphonic acid ester of a phenol-cresol mixture and dioctyl phthalate. |
