PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine suppressing cases that pump up of a lash adjuster frequently occurs and an engine valve is kept under imperfect valve close state for a long period of time. SOLUTION: This device is applied to an internal combustion engine including a valve mechanism opening and closing an exhaust valve. The valve mechanism includes a rocker arm, and one end of the rocker arm is supported by a lash adjuster. The rocker arm is rocked by rotation of a cam with resisting energizing force of a valve spring to open and close the exhaust valve. When it is judged that the exhaust valve is in the imperfect close state (S100:YES), fuel injection quantity is reduced by throttling a throttle valve (S102, S104) to forcedly reduce engine speed.
