PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an anionic emulsifier for emulsion polymerization that affords an emulsion improved in emulsification stability during polymerization, mechanical stability and low foaming property than before. SOLUTION: The anionic emulsifier (A) for emulsion polymerization bears an aromatic ring and is represented by general formula (1) or the like. In the formula, R<SP>1</SP>is a methylene group, an ethylene group or an ethylidene group; R<SP>2</SP>is a hydrogen atom, a 1-22C aliphatic hydrocarbon group or a 6-18C aromatic ring-bearing hydrocarbon group; R<SP>3</SP>is a hydrogen atom or a 1-22C aliphatic hydrocarbon group; Q is an -SO<SB>3</SB>M group, an -OSO<SB>3</SB>M group or an -O(AO)<SB>q</SB>-SO<SB>3</SB>M group; A is a 2-8C alkylene group; M is a cation; q is an integer of 1-100; a1 is 0 or an integer of 1-5; b1 is 0 or an integer of 1-3; p1 is an integer of 1-3; m is an integer of 1-5; and (m+b1+p1) is 2-6.
