<p>This invention provides for a method of synergistically reducing viral load in a patient infected with a virus. The method comprises the oral co-administering an amount of thiophosphonoformic acid and an amount of a nucleoside or nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor in a synergistic combination.</p>
