PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape, a self-diagnostic apparatus of a magnetic tape apparatus, a method diagnosing the magnetic tape apparatus, and a diagnostic program for the magnetic tape apparatus where a burden on a user is not required for determining the cause of error occurrence and reliability of a diagnostic result is improved without requiring physical change in constitution. SOLUTION: In occurrence of abnormality in write/read of the magnetic tape Mt1 provided with a plurality of test areas Ta1 etc. for test on the side of a front end of a prescribed area from the side of a termination, the magnetic tape Mt1 is carried to the area start end position of the test areas Ta1, and a control part 21 carries out write/read of test information in the test areas Ta1 to carry out a test for determining improvement of an error rate, and displays a response to the result of the test on a monitor 25. When the error rate is not improved as the result of the test, the cause of the abnormality is in the magnetic tape Mt1 and a request for exchange is displayed.
