PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To find a target which has moved to and been installed in a measurement point in a short time in a surveying instrument which automatically tracks or collimates the target. SOLUTION: The surveying system comprises the target (60) and the surveying instrument (50) which automatically tracks or collimates the target. The target includes a direction angle sensor (86) for measuring a surveying instrument direction angle (θta,θtb) when it is faced to the surveying instrument. The surveying instrument includes a horizontal angle measurement section for measuring a target direction angle (θsa,θsbθsc) indicating the direction of the target. An estimated target direction angle (θsb) is calculated from the angle difference (θ0) between the surveying instrument direction angle (θta) and the target direction angle (θsa) calculated at the previous measurement and the surveying instrument direction angle (θtb) at this time measurement to direct a surveying instrument body (52) to the direction of the estimated target direction angle.
