<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which can switch between black printing systems without depending on a PDL, and which makes it unnecessary for a user to directly edit data so as to change the black printing system, for example, in the host printing environment without the use of a printer driver. <P>SOLUTION: This printer 1, which is connected to a group of personal computers 2, does printing by receiving print job data, described in the Printer Description Language, from the personal computer group 2. In the printer 1, an imaging part 12, which receives the printing data from a PDL processing part 11 capable of adapting to the different Printer Description Language, identifies a black area in an imaging memory when imaging is performed in the imaging memory.
