<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an hBN-based sintered compact, by which the bending strength of the sintered compact can be easily enhanced. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the boron nitride-based sintered compact comprises forming a single boron nitride powder having a specific surface area of ≥30 m<SP>2</SP>/g and the maximum value of the particle size distribution within a range of 10-40 μm or a raw material powder containing the boron nitride powder and then subjecting the formed body to pressureless sintering or hot press sintering. In this method, it is preferable that the formed body is charged in a vessel made of boron nitride or lined with boron nitride and sintered at a temperature of ≥1,800°C in a non-oxidizing gas atmosphere wherein the volume percentage of nitrogen is ≥80%.
