Polyvinyl chloride compositions contain as plasticizer a neopentyl glycol alkyl phthalate ester of the general formula in which n is 0 or 1 and R is an alkyl group of one to five carbon atoms. The ester may be derived from ortho-, iso-, or tere-phthalic acid, and the alkyl group R may be derived from ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, or n-, iso-, or tert.-butanol. In examples, neopentyl glycol ni-butyl phthalate or the corresponding n-propyl compound is incorporated into polyvinyl chloride or vinyl chloride vinyl acetate copolymer together with a stabilizer such as barium cadmium laurate in a heated roller mill. The plasticized compositions have high resistance to staining by asphalt, shoe-polish, lipstick, ball-point ink, and other materials.ALSO:The invention comprises neopentyl glycol alkyl phthalate esters of the general formula in which R represents an alkyl group having 1-5 carbon atoms and n is 0 or 1. These compounds may be used as plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride resins. In an example, a mixture was made of o-phthalic anhydride, neopentyl glycol, n-butanol, p-toluene sulphonic acid as esterification catalyst, and hexane for azeotropic distillation of water formed in the subsequent esterification. The mixture was heated under reflux, finally to a temperature of 125 DEG C. in the esterification mixture. After about ten hours, the mixture was neutralised with potassium carbonate and the volatile components were removed by steam distillation. The hot liquid was then separated from solid salts by filtration, and the product obtained was essentially neopentyl glycol n-butyl phthalate of average molecular weight 550. In another example n-propanol was used instead of n-butanol, and the corresponding n-propyl compound was obtained. The corresponding isophthalate and terephthalate esters may be obtained in a similar manner.
