A data processing system comprises a central processor with a plurality of peripherals hubs connected either directly or indirectly to it via a peripheral bus (such as the Universal Serial Bus, USB). Each peripheral hub can have a plurality of peripherals connected to it (such as a monitor, keyboard, camera, printer, mouse etc), including another peripheral hub. The central processor traverses the peripheral bus network topology and creates a set of clusters out of the attached peripherals. Broadly, the peripherals connected to each hub are grouped together (not including any hubs that may be present) into terminal clusters, but only if a specific peripheral is present. These terminal clusters consist of a specific set of "computing" components, such as a monitor, keyboard and mouse. The central processor manages at least one user session in relation to each of these terminal clusters. The user sessions are provided by one or more virtual machine sessions running on the central processor. If one of the "computing" peripherals is removed, the user session associated with that terminal cluster may be ended. At the very least, the clusters may need to be rearranged.
