Turbomachinery (10,12), normally used solely for a function such as electrical power generation, is accelerated or decelerated to exchange angular momentum with a vehicle in which it is installed. Electrical voltage output requirements are maintained during these rotational speed changes by coupling excess electrical output to a parasitic load. Multiple sets of turbomachinery rotating on a common axis, but in opposite directions, may be used to meet varying power requirements that require spin speed variations, without any net exchange of momentum. In this case, momentum exchange is effected when desired by varying the spin speed of one of the counterrotating sets of machinery. Multiple sets of turbomachinery may be positioned to rotate about different axes, to provide attitude control about two or more axes.
|
