A hermaphroditic insert member having a hermaphroditic profiled end portion adapted to mate with a corresponding insert member, the mating providing alignment between systems that require connection. One or both insert members adapted to be received within or form an integral part of a connector body. Each insert member may be provided with bores or other means of situating electrical connectors or fibre optic ferrules.
