摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently use emitted light even in the case of using a light source from which the light is emitted with a large dispersion angle, and then, to obtain a bright projection image. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus is provided with: a light source unit array 1RR constituted of a plurality of light source units 1R for emitting red (R) light; a light source unit array 1BB constituted of a plurality of light source units 1B for emitting blue (B) light; and a light source unit array 1GG constituted of a plurality of light source units 1B for emitting green (G) light. R, G and B light emitted from respective light source units 1R, 1B and 1G are converted to nearly parallel light beams by fan-shaped light pipes 2R, 2B and 2G arranged corresponding to the light source units 1R, 1B and 1G. The nearly parallel R, B and G light beams emitted from the light pipe arrays 2RR, 2BB and 2GG of the light pipes 2R, 2B and 2G are synthesized by a cross dichroic prism 4, then, transferred to an image display element (not illustrated) such as liquid crystal. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
