<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for removing nitrogen oxides, excellent in effect for removing nitrogen oxides from exhaust gas at a relatively low temperature or a large amount of exhaust gas, and with small consumption of oxygen compound as a reducing agent. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for removing nitrogen oxides, oxygen compound is used as reducing agent 11 and a nitrogen oxide reducing catalyst layer 12 whose component is γ-Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>is used to reduce the nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas 10 to nitrogen.
