PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for a nonaqueous system secondary battery, especially for a lithium ion secondary battery having higher discharge capacity than conventional graphite carbon material and improved initial efficiency characteristics. SOLUTION: The negative electrode material is manufactured in such a way that the phase of a compound represented by A<SB>α</SB>Sn<SB>β</SB>(A represents at least one element selected from Ni, Co, Fe, and atomic ratio isα/β>1), deposited from a metastable state by quenching and coagulating an alloy raw material containing at least one element selected from Fe, Ni, and Co, and if necessary at least one other element (for example, Al, Ti, Zr, In) from a melted state is made to disappear so that the phase (for example, Co<SB>3</SB>Sn<SB>2</SB>, Fe<SB>1.3</SB>Sn, or Ni<SB>3</SB>Sn) is essentially not present in the electrode material.
