PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a starting characteristic of an electrodeless discharge lamp thereby elongating lifetimes of the lighting circuit and an excitation coil. SOLUTION: The induction coil 22 of the electrodeless discharge lamp 11 has a winding layer 30 in which an even number of layers of two or more layers are laminated including at least one layer of an outward trip side winding layer 31 in which a winding 21 is wound a plurality of times from one end side to the other end side of an axisαand at least one layer of a return trip side winding layer 32 in which the winding 21 is wound a plurality of times from the other end side to the one end side of the axisα. A winding-start ring 34 which is a winding wound once constituting the end of the one end side of the outward trip side winding layer 31 of the innermost layer and a winding-end ring 38 which is the winding wound once constituting the end of the one end side of the return trip side winding layer 31 of the outermost layer are arranged with a space g in an axial direction. The winding-end ring 38 is electrically connected to a first terminal 45A having a large potential amplitude of a matching circuit 27 which a high frequency power supply 24 has.
