The fire protection element (1) has a square flat insulated plate of expanded polystyrene or extruded foam lined on the building side with a gypsum panel. The side faces of the insulated plates have stepped rebates to bear against further such plates. The insulated plates have a groove (4) around the perimeter defined on one side by the gypsum panel and in which non-flammable gypsum fibre plates (5) can be inserted.
