PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To authenticate a terminal to be authenticated without specifying the terminal to be authenticated. SOLUTION: In this authentication system provided with a portable terminal 2 for requesting authentication to an information terminal 1 that performs authentication and the information terminal 1 for receiving a request from the portable terminal 2 to perform authentication, the portable terminal 2 is provided with an information receiving means 21 for receiving authentication information from the information terminal 1, a converting means 22 for converting the received authentication information and an image displaying means 23 for displaying the converted information, and the information terminal 1 is provided with an information transmitting means 12 for transmitting authentication information, an imaging element 13 for picking up information displayed by the portable terminal 2, a converting means 15 for converting picked-up information into authentication information, and an authenticating means 16 for performing authentication by comparing the converted authentication information with the transmitted authentication information.
