PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-saponified cellulose ester film suited as an optical film free from surface defects. SOLUTION: The method for producing the cellulose ester film comprises the step of irradiating at least one surface of a filmlike cellulose ester satisfying all of the requirements specified by the following formulas (S-1) to (S-3) with electron beams at an intensity of 10 to 200 keV at a dose of 10 to 200 kGy and treating the film-like cellulose ester subjected to the irradiation with electron beams with an alkali saponifying solution: formula (S-1) 2.50≤A+B≤3.00, formula (S-2) 0≤A≤2.5, and formula (S-3) 0.5≤B≤3.00, (wherein A is the degree of substitution with acetyl groups; and B is the degree of substitution with 3 to 22C substituted acyl groups).
