<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a reflection polarizer thin and compact, and to improve its productivity. <P>SOLUTION: The refractive indexes are made equal (n<SB>1x</SB>=n<SB>2x</SB>), between the 1st optical anisotropic membrane 42 and the 2nd optical anisotropic membrane 43 in one in-plane direction among the in-plane directions crossing each other. The refractive index in one in-plane direction is made larger than that in the other in-plane direction (n<SB>1x</SB>>n<SB>1y</SB>), in the 1st optical anisotropic membrane 42. The refractive index in one in-plane direction is made smaller than that in the other in-plane direction (n<SB>2x</SB><n<SB>2y</SB>), in the 2nd optical anisotropic membrane 43. Thus, the refractive index difference Δn for the other in-plane direction is made larger than that for the conventional reflective polarizer, and the number of layers to be stacked is reduced. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
