PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide polyester fibers having excellent heat resistance and used for industrial materials, and to provide a method for producing a polyester used for the polyester fibers. SOLUTION: The polyester fibers used for the industrial materials and having excellent heat resistance are characterized by having a carboxy terminal group content of 25 to 40 equivalent/ton and having metal and phosphorus compound contents of (expression 1): M≤3.3 and (expression 2): 1.5≤M/P≤3.5 [M is the total amount (converted into the moles of each atom) of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, manganese, cobalt, antimony, or titanium; P is the total amount (converted into the mole of phosphorus atom) contained in 1 ton of the polyester fibers]. The method for producing the polyester used for the polyester fibers comprises melt-reacting a polyester having a carboxy terminal group content of≤35 equivalent/ton and having metal and phosphorus compound contents of (expression 1): M≤3.3 and (expression 2): 1.5≤M/P≤3.5 with a carbonylbislactam compound represented by general formula (1) (R is a 2 to 8C alkylene).
