PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contrast measuring method capable of calculating precisely a contrast efficiently and easily with a reduced number of data, irrespective of a level of the contrast, by using effectively all the collected data, and effective for calculating a frequency characteristic. SOLUTION: This contrast measuring method has a step for inputting an input pattern of a rectangular wave or sine wave, a step for outputting an output image corresponding to the input pattern, a step for calculating a prescribed statistical quantity based on an output value of the output image, and a step for calculating the contrast, using the prescribed statistical quantity, in an image input and output system.
