PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus wherein; the required minimum amount of a lubricant is applied to avoid excessive supply of the lubricant in order to prevent voids and toner filming; the reduction of productivity due to setting an operation mode for removing the lubricant is avoided; and a removing means for mechanically removing the lubricant is not provided separately from a lubricant applying means to reduce the production cost. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes; a columnar lubricant which is provided on a shaft which is brought into contact with an image carrier and is parallel with a driving shaft of the image carrier, and varies an application area in the direction of the driving shaft of the image carrier by rotation positions of the shaft; a driving means for rotating the lubricant to stop it in an arbitrary application area position; a control means for the driving means; a lubricant applying means for applying the lubricant to the image carrier; and an image width signal processing means for detecting an image width of an image to be printed and performing processing.
