PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce costs of a detecting means which detects a direction of setting of a preprinting paper, and also to improve the detection precision. SOLUTION: A direction of a character L2 preprinted to the preprinting paper P is detected by reading the character by an OCR. The direction is compared with a direction of printing data D. Whether or not the direction of setting of the preprinting paper P is appropriate is judged by coincidence or incoincidence of the directions of the character L2 and the printing data D.
