PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly display a representative picture even if it is a case where motion pictures managed by distinct recording units are intermingled and recorded. SOLUTION: This reproducing apparatus includes a reproducing means, a distinction means, a representative picture formation means, a control means, and a directions means. The reproducing means manages motion picture data recorded on record medium by second unit consisting of at least one first unit determines a regenerating starting position every unit of the first unit and the second unit, and regenerates the motion picture data. The distinction means distinguishes whether the motion picture data are recorded with a predetermined instrument. The representative picture formation means forms a representative image which consists of the representative picture of the motion picture data currently recorded on the record medium, and displays the representative image on an indicating device. In response to distinction result of the distinction means, the control means so controls the representative picture formation means that any of representative picture for every first unit or second unit is selected and displayed.
