PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely prevent occurrence of color shift and to make color shift correction therefor at proper timing, in an image forming apparatus for forming a color image by synthesizing a plurality of color component images. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 10 comprises: an image forming means 11 for forming the color image by synthesizing the plurality of the color component images; a counting means 12 for counting the number of forming the color images with the image forming means 11; a sampling means 13 for detecting a position shift amount between the color component images when the number of counting with the counting means 12 is a prescribed number; a registering adjustment means 14 for correcting the position shift between the color component images on the basis of a detection result by the sampling means 13; and a timing varying means 15 for varying the prescribed number in response to a result in comparison with an expected value for previously setting the detection result by the sampling means 13.
