A system and method for converting a page-based application to a component based application configured for execution on a device, the device configured for communication over a network with a schema-defined service of a data source, the page-based application expressed as a series of presentation pages having embedded data and messaging elements for interaction with a user interface. The system and method comprise an analyzer module for assembling a set of page metadata representing at least a portion of a selected page from the series of pages of the page-based application, the page metadata expressed in a first structured definition language. Also included is a data conversion module for converting the embedded data elements into a data component, the data component containing data descriptors expressed in a selected structured definition language of the component based application. Also included is a message conversion module for converting the embedded messaging elements into a message component, the message component containing message descriptors expressed in the selected structured definition language of the component based application, the message component operatively coupled to the data component. Also included is a dependency module for generating a dependency link associated with an event corresponding to the embedded elements, the dependency link for describing a workflow of the components in respect to operation of the component based application when executed on a user interface of the device.
