PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reading apparatus provided with a plurality of (white) reference boards that can obtain proper (white) reference board read data by looking at a plurality of (white) reference board read data with respect to one and same pixel in perspective. SOLUTION: A reflected light from an original is led to a photoelectric conversion element array 11 through an optical system, reference boards 3, 3' with a uniform density are placed to part of an original face (for shading correction) corresponding to the arrangement direction of the photoelectric conversion element array 11 for reading the original on a contact glass plate 2, image data of each element obtained by reading the reference boards are stored, arithmetic operations are executed for the original reading data by each pixel corresponding to the image data of the reference boards stored in a storage element. The original reading apparatus includes a plurality of the reference boards 3, 3' with the uniform density, a plurality of the reference board data with respect to the same pixel obtained from the boards are looked at with each other on balance, and the read data of the original are calculated by using the data obtained all things considered as the reference board data.
