Two substantially linear relations between input signal power variation and required pump power adjustment are used to control a Raman fiber amplifier. The respective substantially linear relations include at least one linear coefficient that associates the power variation with the power adjustment of a specific Raman pump in a specific wavelength region. This dynamic gain control technique can be applied to an erbium doped fiber/waveguide amplifier.
