PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength selection control method capable of fast wavelength selection and switching and to provide a variable wavelength filter device using the wavelength selection control method. SOLUTION: An RF frequency supplied to an acoustooptical tunable filter for reference to which a plurality of reference wavelengths are inputted to detect a plurality of reference RF frequencies corresponding to the plurality of reference wavelengths, a plurality of subordinate RF frequencies corresponding to a WDM transmitted signal wavelength are calculated from the plurality of reference RF frequencies and set to a 1st register, and tracking optimizing the reference RF frequencies is carried out. While no wavelength selection request is made, the detection of a plurality of reference RF frequencies, setting of a plurality of subordinate RF frequencies to the 1st register, and the tracking are repeated. When a wavelength selection request is made, a subordinate RF frequency corresponding to a requested wavelength is selected from the 1st register and set to a 2nd register for an acoustooptical tunable filter for an operation port, and an RF signal of the subordinate RF frequency set to the 2nd register is generated and supplied to the acoustooptical tunable filter for the operation port to which a WDM transmitted signal is supplied.
