A braking system for vehicles in which brakes are used for steering purposes as well as for normal retardation of the vehicle comprises brakes on opposite sides of the vehicle applied by separate pedals which can be locked together by means, such as a member 22 pivotally mounted on pedal 10, when the brakes are to be applied simultaneously, wherein the brakes on one side of the vehicle are applied directly by one pedal 11 through pull-rod 18 (not shown) and the brakes on the other side are applied through a cross-shaft 16 mounted in an arm 15 angularly movable about the axis of a short shaft 14 mounted in an extension 13 of the second pedal 10, the locking means 22 controlling a locking plunger 27 which, in the free position of the locking means 22, locks the arm 15 to the second pedal 10 so that the arm 15 and cross-shaft 16 move angularly with the pedal to apply the brakes on one side of the vehicle, and in the engaged position of the locking means 22, is withdrawn to allow the arm 15 to move angularly relative to the second pedal 10 and to provide compensation when the pedals are operated simultaneously. |
