PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoelectric sensor which can be miniaturized while taking safety countermeasures in conformity with safety standards for the photoelectric sensor employing laser. SOLUTION: A light projecting head of the photoelectric switch has a first light-receiving element for a monitor for receiving a part of a light emitted from the light projecting head; and a light projection amount control means for performing control, so that a first monitoring signal to be acquired in the first light-receiving element for a monitor may be constant to set the light projection amount of the light-projection element to a predetermined value. A controlling unit of a controller is configured so as to detect an abnormality of the light-projection head on the basis of a monitoring signal acquired from the first light-receiving element for a monitor for monitoring via a head cable, and to suppress the light projection of the light projection element. With this configuration, since the separated type photoelectric switch in which the light projection head is separated from the controller has a configuration in which the abnormality of the light projection head is monitored by the controller side, the number of members installed on the light projection head is reduced and the sensor head can be miniaturized while maintaining safety.
