<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable information terminal which can prevent illegal browsing of data stored in a portable information terminal by a third person, even if the portable information terminal is lost or stolen, and to provide a method of protecting the data. <P>SOLUTION: When a control signal is received through a radio communication part 101, and it is an instruction signal to instruct encryption processing to plaintext data stored in a data memory 109, the plaintext data are encrypted, and the encrypted data are stored in the data memory 109.
