PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contact material excelling in withstand voltage performance and cutoff performance; and to provide a vacuum valve. SOLUTION: This contact material containing a conductive component and an arc-resistant component is so structured that, when the particle diameter and the frequency of the arc-resistant component are x and y, respectively, a granularity distribution of y=f(x) has a plurality maximal values; and the central value (median diameter) xmedof the particle diameter is located between the minimum value xminand the maximum value xmaxof the particle diameter providing the maximal values of the granularity distribution.
