<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically emphasize only the catchlight region in an original image, by accurately extracting the catch light region from an original image. <P>SOLUTION: The morphology processing of the original image Y including a face image is executed so that a processed image Y_<SB>opening</SB>, from which a catch light in the pupil has been removed, can be obtained, and a catchlight region where the catch light is present is extracted, on the basis of an image (Y-Y_<SB>opening</SB>) showing a difference between the original image Y and the processed image Y_<SB>opening</SB>.
