PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detector which performs focus detection of a phase difference detection system by an AF sensor and focus detection of a contrast detection system based on an imaging signal from an imaging device for photography, and which accurately performs focus detection by a contrast detection method. SOLUTION: The imaging device for photography 3 and the AF sensor 5 are constituted of a storage type sensor. In the case of performing focus detection by the phase difference detection system, the focus detection is performed on the basis of a detection signal from the AF sensor 5 corresponding to a focus detection area where a subject is captured. In the case of calculating a focus evaluated value, a signal corresponding to the focus detection area in a video signal from the imaging device 3 is used. In such a case, a storage time setting part 7 sets the storage time for focus detection of the imaging device 3 based on the storage time of the AF sensor 5.
