PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To create a characteristic line, in a characteristic line creating method, more highly accurately indicative of a relationship between the quantity of received light within a range at a smaller light quantity side and a signal value. SOLUTION: Each of a plurality of small-quantity reference beams having predetermined light quantities J1-J4 within a range H1 at a smaller light quantity side in a received light quantity range Ho of a photodetector is individually made incident to the photodetector, and the relationship between the light quantities J1-J4 and signal values S1-S4 outputted from the photodetector is extrapolated to determine a zero light quantity signal value So estimated to be outputted if the quantity of light incident to the photodetector is zero. When a great light quantity reference beam having a light quantity Jh predetermined within a range H2 at a greater light quantity side in the received light quantity range Ho is made incident to the photodetector, a great light quantity reference beam signal value Sh outputted in accordance with the great light quantity reference beam is obtained and based on the zero light quantity signal value So and the great light quantity reference beam signal value Sh, a characteristic line Ta is created, the characteristic line indicating the relationship between the quantity of light received by the photodetector and the signal value outputted by receiving the light.
